L'humour involontaire : des gisements trop souvent inexplorés.

"I can't find English muffins at the supermarket"
I guess you could, anything can be imported but it would be hard to justify a supermarket chain importing a product with a limited shelf life, where only a select
group of customers would purchase the product, the cost and hassle of import to satisfy a customer request.
"Why doesn't Mexico have the FDA"
Mexico does have an agency that regulates food and drugs, one such group is SAGARPA. Why would Mexico have a foreign entity come and tell them how to regulate food and drugs?
"I don't understand why people don't speak English?"
You would not believe how many people have written me asking me this question. Many ex-pats wander off daily to their Spanish class but few really take it seriously and tend to stick to their own kind. In SMA there are more gringo groups than you can shake a stick at. Few people truly speak Spanish and will always have problems communicating. Hey, it's Mexico and people speak Spanish along with about 57 other languages.

Bars on windows and doors. This dates back to Europe. Homes like fortresses and well-protected. Few Mexicans have home insurance. Although I highly recommend it. For this reason, it is cheap. 500,000 pesos worth of coverage for about 100 pesos a month. Fire is generally not an issue as the houses are made from block and cement.

Add this one to your list. Someone suggested this week that they stop setting off fireworks in SMA at early hours. The question was :

"Isn't there a noise ordinance in San Miguel de Allende?"

Now that tops the cake!"
